Do Labourers Need a White Card?
Yes. A labourer carries out construction work, and work health and safety (WHS) law ties the card to that work. Anyone who does construction work in Australia has to complete general construction induction training first, and a labourer is doing it from the first shift. A White Card for labourers is a legal requirement under that law, and the duty to have it falls on every employer the same way.

Assessment is done in person by a qualified assessor who watches you carry out the practical tasks, such as fitting PPE and pointing out hazards. A White Card for labourers is issued once you show you can apply this in practice as well as on paper.
How to Get Your White Card
How you get a White Card follows the same shape across the country, with one variation by state.
- Check how your state delivers the course. Most states and territories require the training in person, while some allow an online white card course delivered live by video call, as long as you are physically located in that state during the assessment.
- Enrol with an RTO approved to deliver the induction training course in your state, and book your place. The course runs for a minimum of six hours.
- Set up your Unique Student Identifier (USI). Every nationally recognised course needs one before your result can be recorded, and the RTO links your statement of attainment to it.
- Bring 100 points of identification on the day, made up of documents such as a driver licence, passport, or Medicare card.
- Complete the training and the practical assessment. Your RTO then issues your statement of attainment, and your state regulator, such as WorkSafe or SafeWork, issues the physical card.
A White Card for labourers is posted to you, and the printed card can take up to around 60 days to arrive depending on the state. Your statement of attainment acts as proof you can carry out construction work while the card is on its way.

FAQ
A White Card has no expiry date and stays valid as long as you keep doing construction work. If you spend two years or more away from the construction industry, you must to complete the training again before returning to construction work.
Losing your card does not mean sitting the course again. Reach out to your training provider to ask them for a replacement. Fees may apply.
Most states set a minimum of 14 to start the training. Anyone under 18 usually needs a parent or guardian to give consent before enrolling.
